Job Description
Main purpose of job
Responsible for the correct implementation, configuration and operation of all SQL Server technology based services within client’s data centre locations, including disaster recovery planning and audit support. The SQL Server DBA works with the customer support and engineering teams to ensure services dependent upon SQL Server such as client’s i-GRasp and ETWeb perform to at least customer SLA and that incidents referred to the DBA are resolved promptly and within customer SLA.
Key responsibilities
• Be the company subject matter expert on SQL Server technologies as used to deliver client’s services
• Ensure all SQL Server instances and databases are actively managed to achieve optimal availability and performance, evidenced by metrics from Idera database monitoring, Logic Monitor infrastructure monitoring and Pingdom service monitoring
• Establish and maintain standard practices on specification, configuration and management of the SQL Server instances and databases to support operation and growth within client’s private and AWS data centres
• Own and maintain SQL Server based AWS server infrastructure, being responsible for correct capacity and being aware of associated cost of delivery
• Provide outstanding support to key stakeholders within Engineering and Customer Support based in Luton, UK
• Troubleshoot performance, quality and availability issues with database servers and associated instances and databases including Index Server as used by client’s services
• Support the Problem Manager to investigate incidents, identify root cause, identify and progress workaround and permanent fix actions
• Work with the Cloud Solution Architect to ensure high quality and consistent architecture documentation exists for all existing and new solutions that include SQL Server
• Understand and comply with key policies and processes, including Change Management, Problem Management, Major Incident Management and Information Security Management
• Be ready to do what it takes to maintain client’s services to SLA and get the job done to meet customer service needs
Required skills
• SQL Server and Windows Server skills including configuration for high availability and recovery (IIS skills highly desirable)
• Experience in other DBMS, specifically MySQL, MongoDB and Oracle is highly desirable
• SQL Server operation within an AWS or other public cloud environment – minimum skill is within a VMware hosting environment
• TCP/IP networking configuration and troubleshooting in relation to SQL database services
• SQL Server database administration including high availability configurations
• Proficiency in T-SQL
• ITIL based service management process operation
• Excellent communication, problem management and analytical skills to ensure solutions are fit for purpose and to support key stakeholders, in particular the Customer Support and Engineering teams based in Luton, UK
Qualifications and experience
• MCSA level certification demonstrating expertise in required technologies
• At least 5 years’ experience supporting mission critical SQL Server database based commercial services, ideally internet facing
• Troubleshooting of SQL Server performance, availability and quality issues
• Monitoring, backup and disaster recovery of SQL Server database instances, databases and services
• Experience of operating in an ITIL driven service management environment, with particular experience in complying with change and problem management
• Experience of working with systems that hold personal data and which are operated in compliance with European data processing rules
